Families on a tight budget this Christmas can enjoy a traditional festive dinner at home for only £2.89 a head, new research has revealed.
A survey conducted by Good Housekeeping magazine found that a full Christmas dinner, including turkey, stuffing, four types of veg, potatoes, mince pies, cake and pudding with brandy butter, for eight people can be put together for just over £23 by shopping around for the best deals.
Researchers compared prices at six different supermarkets Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Lidl and the Co-op to find the cheapest Christmas meal .
A basket of 11 traditional Xmas treats from the grocers came to £23.08 in total, which feeds eight people at £2.89 per person.
For those who dont fancy shopping at several supermarkets during the busy festive season, Morrisons was found to offer the best value for the entire basket of goods, with the 11 items costing £28.24, or £3.53 per head.
Caroline Bloor, consumer editor of Good Housekeeping magazine, said: "Our advice is to track down the cheapest source of fresh veg, use own brands and budget ranges where you can get away with it, and dont buy extra food just in case. This will all help balance out the increased cost of luxury items."
