Sainsburys is set to open a new supermarket in Newport, South Wales, later this month in a move that has helped boost employment in the area.
The Sainsburys store in Crindau is scheduled to open for business on September 22 on the former Crindau gasworks site, replacing the existing store on Heidenheim Drive.
The retailer said all 250 staff at the Heidenheim Drive store will be transferred to the new supermarket where they will be joined by over 100 new recruits.
According to reports, Sainsburys has received around 500 applications for the 120 jobs that have been created by the new store.
The Newport supermarket includes a restaurant, a 670-space car park, and a petrol station, as well as a number of eco-friendly features such as rainwater-harvesting equipment and the use of natural light.
The site of the current Sainsburys store will be used to build houses, flats and a hotel after outline planning permission was granted by the council last November.
