Bread is the most commonly thrown away food in the UK, according to new research by supermarket chain Waitrose .
A survey of the countrys food waste habits, conducted by OnePoll for Waitrose, found that around 55 per cent of people throw away bread each week, followed by bananas (31 per cent) and bagged salad (30 per cent).
Other commonly wasted foods include lettuce, cold meats and apples, with 19 per cent, 18 per cent and 17 per cent of those surveyed admitting to throwing them in the bin each week respectively.
The research also found that Brighton is the worst town in the country for food waste, with more than 16 per cent of residents binning food on a daily basis.
In comparison, just 2 per cent of people in Chelmsford, Essex, waste food each day, making it the nations least food wasting town.
The results of the survey were released to coincide with the launch of the Prince of Wales Start initiative, which is designed to encourage people to live a more sustainable way of life.
As part of the program, Waitrose will provide advice on how food can be produced, bought, transported, stored, cooked and disposed of in a more eco-friendly way.
