Sainsburys Announces First Supermarket Bakery College

Sainsburys has announced plans to launch the first supermarket bakery college . The supermarket chain announced plans to open the Wellingborough college to help prospective bakers to obtain their NVQs and learn the necessary skills to work at the in-store bakeries across Sainsburys supermarkets in the UK. Sainsburys claims the college will cut the amount of time taken to train employees by half, from twelve months to six months, and will ensure they bake to very high standards. The college is being launched in conjunction with flour supplier Whitworth.

More details of the college will be unveiled by Sainsburys Chief Executive Justin King at the IGD Food and Grocery Industry Skills and Employment Summit today. Industry officials will be attending the event, while a number of speakers will address the officials throughout the day, including Dave Lewis from Unilever, Lucy Neville-Rolfe from Tesco and Andy Clarke from Asda .

Mr King said the scheme was just one of the initiatives conceived by Sainsburys to train their colleagues, and he also said the scheme aimed to give employees the skills and qualifications required for a long career in the retail industry.
