UK supermarkets saw sales rocket over the weekend as Britons stocked up on barbeque goods and other summerrelated foods to enjoy the hot weather.
Tesco, Britains largest grocery retailer, said sales of barbecue-related items this weekend reached an all-time high thanks to the summer weather and yesterdays last 16 World Cup match between England and Germany.
Tesco shoppers purchased some 9 million fresh sausages over the two days, along with 700,000 bags of salad and almost 1.5 million tubs of cream to go with a million punnets of strawberries .
Barbeque goods also helped drive sales at Asda up by 23 per cent this weekend. The UKs number two supermarket said it sold 5 million sausages, 2.8million pork pies, and 3.1million packets of potato wedges and nachos dips.
Ice cream was also very popular among customers, with Asda stores bringing in extra stock to cope with a surge in demand.
An Asda spokeswoman said: "For every degree of temperature that rises above 24 degrees, we stock 33,000 extra litres of our St Georges Cross Ice Cream with vanilla and strawberry flavours."
