Supermarket chain Morrisons has expanded its distribution services with the acquisition of independent fresh food manufacturer Simply Fresh Foods .
The Simply Fresh Foods product packing facility in Worsley, Manchester, will form part of Morrisons' manufacturing division to "provide a dedicated produce packing and distribution service" to its 420-plus UK stores.
A spokesperson for the grocery retailer said: "We have taken the decision to expand our produce-packing capacity, acquiring the Worsley sites operated by Simply Fresh, which will supply packed vegetable lines."
"The acquisition of this business will make an important contribution to serving the needs of our customers as we continue to grow from national to nationwide."
Morrinsons added that it aims to invest in developing the facility further with new equipment.
The UK's fourth largest supermarket chain currently operates 13 distribution centres and 13 manufacturing sites, including three abattoirs, and is one of the nations five biggest food producers.
Simply Fresh Foods produces and supplies fresh-cut, prepared vegetables and potatoes, stir-fry mixes and ready-to-eat salad products.
