A new £50 million supermarket is to be built in the area of Longbridge, Birmingham, helping to create hundreds of new jobs in the area which used to be the home of motoring innovation.
Site developers St Modwen revealed that "detailed contract negotiations" with one of the big four supermarket chains Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons - are underway for an 80,000 sq ft food store on Longbridge Lane next to the new Bournville College site.
St Modwen chief executive Bill Oliver said the superstore could create up to 500 job opportunities for local people in total when it opens in 2012.
"It is going to be £30 million to £40 million worth of investment on our terms and they will have to kit it out, which may be another £10 million," he added.
A planning application for the store project has already been submitted.
