Tesco has launched a two-week trial of its first Buy One Get One Free Later (BOGOFL) deals which it hopes will help cut down on food waste.
The BOGOFL deal applies to four fruit and veg items - pineapple, melon, salad and lettuce with customers able to claim their free product on the same day or collecting it the following week, using a voucher given to them at the checkout.
Tesco said the BOGOFL initiative is part of its wider plans to increase low carbon choices for customers and turn the company into a zero carbon business by 2050.
Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Tescos executive director, said: "Customers really like our BOGOF deals but feedback shows smaller households sometimes cant use the free product before its use by date."
"Now were giving customers the flexibility to take advantage of the great value offer by claiming their free product the following week instead."
"As well as giving our customers a flexible new offer, were helping them to cut food waste."
Commenting on the retailers green drive, she added: "Weve already made great progress on reducing packaging waste, encouraging re-use of carrier bags and recycling ."
"Last year, Tesco pledged not to send any waste to landfill and customers tell us they want to do their bit too."
