Sainsburys To Offer Shoppers More Fairtrade Products

Sainsbury's is set to expand its range of Fairtrade products this week in a bid to attract more ethically conscious customers.

The supermarket chain said it hopes that the new products, along with its RSPCA-approved meats, will help to create a "point of difference"' in an extremely competitive market.

Sainsbury’s currently stocks 700 Fairtrade products, including coffee, chocolate, rice, bananas, sugar and tea, and claims to now be the biggest Fairtrade retailer in the world with sales over the past year reaching £210 million.

Fairtrade is an international trade movement that works to provide better trading conditions for farmers in developing countries by offering them a higher price for their goods.

MP Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development, said: " Supermarkets stocking Fairtrade goods give millions of shoppers the opportunity to make a difference to farmers in the developing world."

The move by Sainsburys comes ahead of Fairtrade Fortnight, an annual campaign run by the Fairtrade Foundation - the independent non-profit organisation that licenses the use of the FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the UK.

For this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, which will run from 22 February to 7 March, the Foundation is asking people to get involved by swapping their usual products for "Fairtrade stuff".
