New grocery market figures have revealed that Morrisons and Sainbsurys were the best performing major supermarket chains during the busy World Cup trading period.
According to data from market researchers Kantar Worldpanel, both retailers grew their respective share of the UK grocery sector by 0.2 per cent in the 12 weeks to August 8, with taking its share to 11.6 per cent and Sainsbury's claiming 16.1 per cent of the market.
In contrast, the figures showed that sales growth at the UKs two largest supermarket groups, Tesco and Asda failed to match the 4.5 per cent increase experienced by the wider market.
As a result, Tesco saw its market share fall slightly from 31 per cent to 30.8 per cent, while Asdas share dipped from 17.2 per cent to 16.9 per cent.
Kantar Worldpanel spokesperson Edward Garner said: "Morrisons in particular has shown a strong performance this month."
"Despite some commentators expecting the Morrisons growth to run out of steam, it still comfortably leads the top four in terms of year-on-year performance with (sales) growth of 6.9 percent."
The market analysts said the second quarter sales growth at Britain's grocers was driven by rising food inflation, which reached 2.2 per cent over the 12 weeks to August 8.
