Sainsbury's has apologised for a mix-up at one of its fuel forecourts in Oxfordshire last week which led to a number of drivers putting the wrong fuel in their cars .
The supermarket chain said unleaded and diesel fuel had been put in the wrong underground tanks at its filling station in Wantage on Wednesday morning.
The mix-up went unnoticed for half-an-hour after the petrol station opened for business at 7am, leaving 20 motorists with potentially damaged engines.
Sainsburys said its fuel supplier was to blame for the error and confirmed that customers would be reimbursed for any damage caused.
A spokesman for the grocery retailer said: "We did experience a technical problem at our Wantage petrol filling station on Wednesday morning and 20 cars were reported to be affected.
"All customers have now been contacted and are being fully reimbursed. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Any other drivers who think they have been affected have been urged to contact Sainsburys customer careline on 0800 636 262.
