Tesco has launched a new web-based fashion store as part of plans to become a major player in the online fashion market.
The clothing site, Tesco.com/clothing, opened to internet shoppers on Saturday with a total 3,500 product lines - a further 1,000 lines on top of the 2,500 currently sold in stores - and 20 brands across women’s, men’s and kidswear.
In addition to the usual Tesco clothing brands such as F&F and Cherokee, shoppers can also purchase items from popular high-street brands like Nike and Timberland and hip East London label Liquorish, with prices ranging from £5 to £200.
Tesco has even collaborated with actress, turned accessories designer, Mischa Barton to offer designer handbags .
The new site also features a ‘get the look’ section where customers can find out how to emulate the latest catwalk styles.
Tesco currently generates around £1 billion a year through its clothing business and hopes the new online venture will account for 10 per cent of total clothing sales in the near future.
Commenting on the move, Tesco’s clothing chief executive Terry Green, said: "Clothing is not only one of the fastest growing online markets, but the word ‘clothing’ is also one of the most searched for categories at tesco.com so we know the site will be popular with both existing and new online customers."
Green estimates that Tesco is currently the fourth largest value clothing retailer in the UK, behind rival supermarket chain Asda, high street chain Primark and Marks and Spencer .
