Two of Britains largest supermarkets have slashed prices on their childrens toys by a total of £16m as the battle for Christmas sales heats up.
Tesco, the UKs largest retailer, has launched a half-price sale on all its Xmas toys, which according to the company offers shoppers total savings of £10m.
Not to be outdone, Asda has responded by offering £6m in discounts through its Christmas Toy Event.
Asda said a survey of 8,000 shoppers revealed that nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of parents had already started their Christmas shopping, and a fifth were anxious about the cost of their childrens presents.
A spokesperson for the Wal-Mart owned supermarket said: "Shoppers need to be more prepared so they can spread the cost of Christmas, while all retailers will be competing to get customers through their doors."
Tesco said toy sales have so far exceeded expectations, with the Barbie Musketeer, Tomy Mega sketcher and the remote controlled cars proving the most popular buys.
"We started our half-price toy sale at the beginning of October and have already found that many have stocked up early," a spokesman said.
"We have more than 100 popular toys at half price or less and expect to save customers over £10m this Christmas ."
