Aldi Given Green Light To Build New Store In Swindon

Discount supermarket chain Aldi has been given permission to build a new store in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Swindon Council’s planning committee voted unanimously in favour of the new store on Drove Road but refused the retailer’s late application for deliveries to be allowed from 7am instead of the original 8am.

Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Dale Heenan, said the application was 'quite a smart development."

Local residents had voiced concerns that the development would lead to increased traffic around the new site, but according to ward councillor Martin Wiltshire those have now been resolved.

Aldi said the new 1,583sq metre supermarket, which will also include a 78-space car park, would create many new job opportunities in the area.

Peter Lawson of Turley Associates, the company representing Aldi, said the grocery retailer hopes to set up another five stores across the town over the next few years, adding that "Aldi views Swindon as their home town in the South West".
