Morrisons Slash Premium Champagne Prices

Morrisons has cut the price of premium Champagnes across its stores in a bid to generate footfall in the build up to Christmas .
The supermarket chain is now offering a bottle of Lanson Champagne for just over £13 and a bottle of Bollinger Special Cuvée for £17.95.
Prices on the market leading Moet and Chandon and Nicholas Feuillatte Champagne brands have also been slashed to £12.99 a bottle.
Rival retailers Waitrose, Marks and Spencer and Ocado have also made significant reductions to the their Champagne prices, while Tesco has reportedly asked its suppliers to find 300,000 bottles of branded champagne that it can sell for £10 each.
According to research firm AC Neilsen, the total champagne market grew by 3.3 per cent in the 12 weeks to November 1.
However, Morrisons Champagne buyer Catherine Roffey said sales of bubbly at the supermarket grew by an impressive 21.1 per cent during the same period.
Last week consumer group Which? claimed that supermarket own-brand champagnes taste just as good as expensive brands.
Which? judges blind-tasted a range of champagnes and sparkling wines and praised Sainsbury’s Blanc de Noirs Brut, which is currently on offer at £12 a bottle, for its full, dry and fruity flavour.
They also ranked a pair of sparkling wines from Asda and discount chain Aldi priced at under £7 per bottle as exceptional value for money.
Martyn Hocking, editor of Which? magazine, said: “With the party season ahead of us it’s great to know that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a good quality champagne .”
