Tesco has followed up last weeks victory over the Competition Commission by lodging hundreds of applications for new stores on the sites of failed pubs across the UK.
As part of its latest expansion plans, the supermarket giant has put in applications to convert buildings previously used by pubs and rival retailers into Tesco convenience stores and supermarkets .
The move comes after Tesco won a Competition Appeals Tribunal over proposals from the Competition Commission to reduce the retailer monopoly in towns throughout Britain.
Tesco has submitted ten applications in the last three months and total applications are believed to be over 200.
Pubs are a particularly attractive proposition to Tesco as they are already licensed to sell food and alcohol and therefore do not require an application to councils for a change of use.
Tesco has already taken over sites formerly owned by other failed businesses, such as Woolworths, and has plans in place for sites previously owned by MFI, service stations and banks .
