Tesco is set to axe a further 80 jobs at its UK headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, following a review of its budgets.

The move comes only a month after the supermarket giant warned of the possibility of up to 100 job losses at its head office, although only 20 redundancies were confirmed.

The cuts will be made from the design planning department, along with several development manager positions, and represent a three per cent reduction in staff at its HQ, where more than 3,000 staff are currently employed.

Defending the move, a spokeswoman for the retailer said: "Every year as we finalise our budgets we review the work carried out in our offices to ensure we are working as simply and efficiently as possible."

"This year we are focussing on investing in our stores and reducing prices for customers and to help us do this we are making changes that will affect a very small number of jobs in our offices," she added.
