Waitrose strawberries are the tastiest on the high street, according to a new survey by consumer magazine Which?
Which? asked 136 people to rate strawberries from eight UK supermarkets on appearance, aroma, taste and texture and found Waitrose and Marks and Spencer to have the best varieties.
The tasters praised the M&S strawberries for their juiciness, “lovely colour” and “inviting” appearance.
However, the strawberries from Waitrose cost £1 less for the same quantity (£1.99 for 400g) than those from M&S, which were the most expensive strawberries tested, and were judged just as attractive.
The Which? research was based on standard fruit, rather than organic, from supermarket chains Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl and Marks and Spencer .
Lidl was also given a high score for its 400g pack of strawberries for 99p, which respondents described as a “bargain”.
Fellow discounter Aldi and Sainsbury’s were tasters’ least favourite strawberry retailers, with the varieties described as hard and bitter.
