Aldi has been crowned supermarket of the year by consumer group Which?.
The German-based retailer beat fellow discounter Lidl and upmarket grocer Waitrose to the Best Supermarket title at the Which.co.uk consumer champion awards in London on Tuesday.
Aldi's sales rose an impressive 13.6 per cent in the 12 weeks to 19 April, compared with the same period the previous year, as it continued to lure cash-strapped shoppers through the doors of its 403 UK stores.
As a result, the budget food store now holds a 2.9 per cent share of the UK grocery market and plans to increase this to 12 per cent over the next 4-5 years.
Last month Aldi further highlighted its value credentials by advertising 140 products at just 99p each.
The discounter compared the lines with similar products offered by supermarket giants Tesco and Asda and claimed that buying 100 of them could save customers up to £23.
Aldi was founded in 1962 by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht (Aldi stands for Albrecht Discount).
The brothers retired as CEOs in 1993. Despite giving most of their wealth to foundations and charities they still remain Germanys richest men, earning an estimated 1.5 billion Euros per year from their supermarket business.
