Tesco has slashed prices on more than a third of its clothing range in a further bid to attract budget conscious shoppers.
The supermarket giant will invest £19 million over the next year in reducing clothing prices and said fresh price cuts will be made every six weeks.
Reductions on the prices of over 700 popular clothing items were introduced yesterday. Among the offers are men's suits for £25, children's t-shirts from £2, girls tracksuits for £5 and women's jeans for £6.
The move follows on from two successful clothing promotions launched by Tesco in 2008. A £5 mens knitwear promotion last November resulted in a volume increase of 572 per cent compared with pre-promotion sales, while a ladies-outfit-for-£10 deal last October saw sales grow by 490 per cent.
Clothing chief executive Terry Green commented: "With all the doom and gloom of the credit crunch we want to give our customers better value for money and more choice than ever before."
"To kick start this initiative, we've selected our 'most wanted' products that we know are popular with our customers and slashed the prices."
"Customers can rest assured that low prices are here to stay and the garments are from the same suppliers and of the same quality our customers have come to expect - no compromises, just great fashion product at lower prices."
Green explained that the company was able to slash prices due to the volumes it buys in and the "strong partnerships" it has with its suppliers .
"Purchasing high volumes from them means we can work together to pass cost savings on to our customers," he added.
Last week Tesco revealed that clothing sales grew 5 per cent year-on-year over the festive period, despite reporting its worst Christmas trading figures in almost 20 years.
