Asda To Create 7,000 UK Jobs

Asda has pledged to create 7,000 new jobs this year, becoming the latest supermarket to announce the addition of new positions.

The supermarket chain said some 3,700 positions will be created through the opening of 14 new stores, including five new Asda Living outlets, and the extension of 15 existing sites.

An additional 2,000 jobs will come from the expansion of its online business, Asda.com plus 1,000 through organic growth.

Asda chief executive Andy Bond said: "This year we will create 7,000 new jobs at a time when many companies are having to lay people off."

"We will also be helping 3,000 long-term unemployed get back into work by specifically targeting them for existing vacancies in our business."

"Our track record of recruiting and retaining people is second to none, which is why we have the lowest turnover and most motivated workforce in British retail," he added.

The Wal-Mart owned retailer said it aims to specifically target long-term unemployed people for 3,000 of the new vacancies, which are both full-time and part-time, and will work with government agency Remploy to try to secure employment for a significant number of disabled people.

Supermarket giants Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons have already pledged to create 20,000 jobs between them this year in a bid to help reduce unemployment levels in the UK.
