Supermarkets See Surge In Sales Of Energy-Saving Bulbs

Supermarket giants Tesco and Sainsburys have reported record sales of compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) in January.

Some 4.5 million CFLs were sold at Tesco stores nationwide over the post-Xmas period – double the number sold by the retailer during the whole of 2006.

Sainsbury's sold 1.25 million of the energy-saving bulbs, an increase of 150 per cent on the same period the previous year.

Tesco sales were driven by a fortnight-long deal of five CFLs for just 40p. One compact fluorescent bulb usually costs 35p, compared with the 20p charge for a 60 watt incandescent bulb .

Together.com – the CO2-cutting project whose members include Tesco – said that the low prices are great news for cash-strapped shoppers looking to reduce their energy bills amid the economic recession .

The sales figures come after a report by the Daily Mail suggested that UK shoppers favour energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs over energy-saving compact fluorescents.
