Supermarket giants Asda and Tesco have sparked a festive petrol price war by cutting the price of fuel by up to 3p a litre.
Asda slashed the price of unleaded petrol at its 179 UK forecourts to 103.9p per litre and the cost of diesel to 105.9p a litre on Saturday.
Average UK pump prices stood at 108.9p per litre for petrol and 110.2p per litre for diesel before the changes were made over the weekend.
David Miles, Asda's commercial director, said: "With Christmas just around the corner, it's a time when cash is tight and we want to help our customers make it go further.
"With this early Christmas present, we're putting money back in our customers' pockets wherever they fill up by moving quickly to pass the saving on as our costs fall."
A Tesco spokeswoman said their price cuts would help millions of customers travelling over the festive period.
She said: "We're committed to being competitively priced on petrol and with hundreds of petrol stations throughout the country, customers can trust they will get a good price on petrol at Tesco ."
However, Paul Watters from the AA said the fuel price cuts could have been made a few weeks ago "rather than just before Christmas", with wholesale fuel prices dropping by more than a penny in the last six weeks.
"I think theyve been holding out for as long as they could before someone started pointing the finger at them," he said.
"The supermarkets have done this in the past. They will lead the market and hopefully we will now see the premium brands follow suit."
