Waitrose is currently the UKs fastest-growing supermarket, with latest figures from TNS Worldpanel showing market-leading growth of 10.2 per cent in the 12 weeks to August 9.
TNS said the companys strong performance is due to the "successful introduction" of its Essentials value range and the completed conversion of several stores it acquired as a result of the Co-op's takeover of the Somerfield chain.
By contrast, the data shows sales growth among the discount supermarkets continues to drop dramatically, with Aldi and Lidl showing growth of 8.1 per cent and 6.3 per cent respectively well below the 26 per cent rise posted by Aldi at the close of last year.
Our data shows the new shoppers attracted to these outlets and their low prices have largely failed to convert to regular loyal users," said TNS Worldpanel .
Of the big four supermarket chains, Morrisons reported the largest growth, with its sales advancing by 9.2 per cent in the 12-week period, followed by Asda (8.3 per cent) and Sainsburys (7.6 per cent).
Tesco increased sales by just 5 per cent in the 12 week period, below the grocery sector average of 5.6 per cent.
But despite its poor performance, the retail giant is still Britains leading supermarket by some distance with a market share of 31 per cent.
