A £2.98 bottle of Asda own-label wine has become the cheapest ever to win a medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards .
Asdas Portuguese Rosé saw off competition from 299 Portuguese wines, including more famous rosés, to receive a commended medal - the first time a bottle under £3 has received such an accolade.
Judges at the 2009 international wine contest, which attracted a record 10,285 entrants from around the world, praised the rosés "lively and lightly spritzy" character.
Asda also picked up two bronze medals for its Valencia Tempranillo red, priced at just £3.08, and £3.24 Medium Chardonnay .
Decanter's tastings director Christelle Guibert, said several supermarket wines costing less than a fiver had scored highly this year, which was "great news for consumers".
"As the credit crunch continues and more people are choosing to entertain at home it is reassuring for them to know they can pop to the local supermarket, pick up an award-winning wine and still get change from £3," she commented.
"The awards attracted more entries than ever before and the standard was incredibly high, so this supermarket rosé is in very good company!"
Philippa Carr, head of product development at Asda, said the retailer had more than 32 award-winning wines on sale for under £5.
