Asda was the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket in the 12 weeks to March 22, according to latest figures from market analysts TNS WorldPanel.
TNS said the entire grocery sector saw growth of 5.8 per cent over the three-month period, lagging behind food price inflation of 9.3 per cent.
Asda, Britain's second-biggest grocery retailer, was the best performer, growing 8.5 per cent year-on-year and achieving a record market share of 17.5 per cent, compared with 17.1 per cent this time last year.
Morrisons also beat the sector growth average of 5.8 per cent with growth up 7.2 per cent, taking its market share to 11.8 per cent.
Sainsburys growth of 5.7 per cent was in line with the grocery sector average, at a market share of 16.1 per cent.
However, the UK’s biggest retailer Tesco recorded a growth rate of just 4.3 per cent and saw its share of the market fall from 30.8 per cent to 30.4 per cent over the year.
Meanwhile discounters Aldi, Lidl and Netto saw their collective share increase from 5.5 per cent to 5.9 per cent.
