Food And Drink Prices Rise 5.9 Per Cent

Prices on all food and drink products sold at Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys – Britain’s top three supermarket chains – have risen by 5.9 per cent over the last year, new figures have revealed.

According to a survey by MySupermarket.co.uk, average yearly food bills for families across the UK are now £1,040 higher than they were in September 2007.

The website’s Food Inflation Index showed that a basket of 24 common items such as tea bags and pasta sauce costs 20 per cent more than it did 12 months ago, while the cost of six pints of semi-skimmed milk has increased from £1.68 to £2.12 during the same period.

Shoppers have seen the biggest price increases on peas and basmati rice, increasing by an average of 90 per cent and 111 per cent respectively, while there has also been large rises in the cost of meat, dairy and wheat based products .

The survey also found that customers at the top three supermarkets are being charged £2.58 for a dozen medium free range eggs and 79p for a packet of fusilli pasta, compared to costs of £2.15 and 45p respectively in 2007.

Last month, official figures revealed that the rate of inlfation has risen to 4.7 per cent, with food inflation reaching 13 per cent.
