Morrisons Launches Plastic Bag Reduction Initiative

Morrisons is to launch a new ‘green’ initiative that aims to reduce customers' plastic bag use by 50 million a month.

From today, the retailer is to hand out 10 million reusable bags to shoppers in a move that will also offer shoppers the option of buying a multi-trip charity bag for 10p to fundraise for charities including Help The Aged and Childline .

Morrsiosn said all the free reusable bags and the multi-trip charity bags - which will be available throughout the year in all stores - carry a message about the grocer’s efforts to reduce its "environmental impact".

Branded 'Today', the initative focuses the company’s efforts to take action now rather than simply promising action for the future.

Morrisons group marketing and communications director Angus Maciver said: "By encouraging customers to reuse their shopping bags we've already cut the number of bags by 110m. But we want to do more."

"We believe this new initiative could cut bag use much further – possibly by as much as 50 million bags a month – and will help continue to reduce the environmental impact of carrier bags .By giving away these bags today, we can make a real difference for tomorrow."

Maciver added that other measures the grocer has introduced to tackle bag usage "include providing cardboard boxes at checkouts as an alternative".
