Tesco Direct End Online Clothing Trial

Tesco has announced the closure of its online clothing service, part of its Tesco Direct operation .

The move comes less than six months after the launch of the trial service and follows the news that the retailer is set to provide its online customers with made-to-order furniture in a bid to compete with retailers such as Ikea and DFS.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "We did a trial to sell clothes online starting in November, which I can confirm has ended."

"We are reviewing the results of that trial and will then decide an outcome based on that."

The spokeswoman denied suggestions that the end of the trial meant that the activity had proved to be "unsuccessful", despite Tesco previously stating plans to sell 300 lines from its women’s clothing range through its Tesco Direct service .

Launched in 2006, Tesco’s non-food catalogue and online business Tesco Direct has grown to become a major part of the retailer’s global growing empire. The business sells a wide selection of non-food products, ranging from mobile phones to baby products .

Last Christmas Tesco reported a 24 per cent rise in its non-food sales, through its online operations Tesco.com and Tesco Direct, for the six weeks to January 5 - reaching £190m.
