Sainsburys Pledge To Sell Sustainable Salmon

Sainsbury’s has announced it is to source all of its farmed salmon from sustainable stocks with high animal welfare standards.

Britain’s third-largest supermarket chain, which accounts for 27 per cent of UK salmon sales, has signed a deal with Marine Harvest Scotland that will involve the latter supplying around 12,000 tonnes of fish each year.

All of the farms from which the salmon will be sourced meet the standards of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), Sainsbury’s confirmed.

Sainsburys has pledged to source all of its salmon, cod, tuna, haddock and prawns from sustainable sources by 2010.

Sainsbury's chief executive, Justin King, commented: "We sell the most salmon out of any retailer in the UK, so focusing on this first will make a significant difference".

Alice Clark, a farm animal scientist for the RSPCA, added: "This is a big leap forwards for salmon farmed to higher welfare standards. The standards require appropriate space for the fish to swim in and ensure they are handled, transported and killed humanely."

The salmon is set to go on sale in all Sainsbury's stores today and will be supported by a TV commercial featuring Jamie Oliver .
