Rise In Affluent Shoppers Reported At Asda

An increasing number of affluent shoppers are starting to carry out their weekly grocery shopping at Asda, the supermarket chain has claimed.

The Wal-Mart owned retailer has reported a 6.5 per cent rise in AB customers over the past 12 weeks to June 15 compared to the same period last year, which it believes is largely attributed to the effects of the credit crunch.

According to the retailer, 25 per cent of its 7.5 per cent growth, which it reported last week, is coming from AB shoppers. It added that 2.5 million AB households shopped at its stores during the 3 month period.

Asda said the figures represent an 11.2 per cent increase in spend from AB consumers, which it claims is nearly double the boost seen at discount chains Lidl, Aldi and Netto combined.

Sales of organic green tea at the grocer have risen by 18 per cent, Fairtrade Latin American coffee by 15.5 per cent and luxury pizzas by 17.3 per cent rise.

During the same period Asda reported a 46.3 per cent increase in sales of French red wine despite a 0.9 per cent fall across the market – giving it an 8.6 per cent share of all French wine sales in the UK .

Asda said it has also seen sales of Puglian olive oil increase by 6.5 per cent, and a 9.5 per cent lift in sales of ice cream foudu sets and luxury toilet paper.
