Morrisons has announced a new wave of price cuts on a range of popular staple products in a bid to help cash-strapped consumers affected by the credit crisis.

Under the new 'Price Crunch' initiative, shoppers will be able to buy a basket of eight items including potatoes, tomatoes and sausages for just £4, or 50p each.

Fresh produce lines included in the offer include four fresh salad tomatoes for 50p, a 500g pack of Baby Pearl potatoes for 50p and iceburg lettuce for 50p.

Meat products and bread rolls have also been slashed in price, with a pack of eight pork sausages, four quarter-pounder burgers, two peppered grill steaks, and four chicken drumsticks and thighs all priced at just 50p.

The deal comes just days after Morrisons announced it will be doubling the number of price cuts in-store from 2,000 to 4,000.

The supermarket chain said the special offers would be available in stores nationwide until Sunday, July 13.

Commenting on the initiative, Morrisons' Group Trading Director, Martyn Jones, said: "We know what our customers need and we are delivering it. These are great deals on some of our most popular summer products, which will give customers a real boost."

"Our 2,000 Price Cuts in June delivered real savings to our customers and we've doubled that to 4,000. Our summer deal will be another huge saving at a time when our customers need it most."
