Supermarket giant Asda has revealed Christmas Eve sales reached a record high, a third higher than its previous biggest Christmas Eve in 2004.
The retailer completed 21 million transactions in the week prior to Christmas, with Saturday (December 22) being the busiest day.
According to new figures released by parent company Wal-Mart, checkouts at Asda stores throughout the UK received 67 customers a second - helping six of its stores achieve sales of more than £4 million.
Asda bosses said its busiest store was Boldon, near Newcastle which served more than 30 shoppers a minute, closely followed by their superstore in Swansea .
A total of 41 stores exceeded sales of £3 million in the seven days to December 31 and sales in 159 stores were greater than £2 million.
Asda said its Extra Special range had its best Christmas ever, with sales doubling year-on-year, boosted by strong Christmas pudding sales .
