Ten UK supermarkets have been forced to withdraw nearly 50 fresh salmon products because of fears they could be contaminated by diesel .
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the affected products may have an unpleasant "white spirit" taste, but was unlikely to pose a health risk as the chemicals causing the problem were at low levels.
The salmon's supplier, Marine Harvest, said it believed the fish had been tainted by leaked diesel from a boat that catches fish for processing.
The fish was supplied to all of the big four supermarket chains - Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, and Morrisons as well as food firm Youngs Seafood .
Other supermarkets that had supplies of the fish, with use-by dates of 7 - 28 February, were Booths, Budgens, the Co-op, Nisa-Today, ShopRite and Somerfield.
In a statement Marine Harvest said it wanted to apologise to customers and reassure them of its quality assurance procedures .
Morrisons was first to alert Marine Harvest over the contaminated salmon . The retailer contacted the supplier last week after complaints forced a recall of around 30 Scottish salmon products .
