Asda has been forced to recall 300,000 of its own-brand microwaves following complaints of overheating.

The supermarket giant said three customers had contacted them stating that the Duraband microwave, priced at £22.75, had been malfunctioning leading to Asda issuing a mass recall over fears the product could pose a fire risk.

An Asda statement said: "As we are concerned that this is a fire risk we have taken the decision to recall this model . "We are glad to say that no one has been hurt."

The statement instructed customers who had purchased the product - model number XB2316 - to stop using it and return the microwave to their nearest store for a full refund .

A spokesman for the retailer commented: "All of our products are designed and tested to British Standards. We would encourage anyone who has bought this particular model to bring it back to store for a full refund ."

"It goes without saying we are very sorry indeed," he added.
