Morrisons has become the first supermarket chain to cut the price of diesel at its forecourts to under £1-a-litre.
The retailer has announced that from today all its pumps will be selling diesel at 99.9p a litre – down 34p from its highest level in July.
Morrisons has been leading the way in reducing the cost of fuel as the global price of crude oil continues to drop. The grocer was the first in the UK to drop the price of unleaded petrol to below £1-a-litre in October and less than 90p last month.
"Morrisons is taking the lead again in helping motorists," commented chief executive Marc Bolland. "This time, we are the first in the UK to sell diesel for less than £1 a litre."
The move means drivers of a typical diesel family car will be able to re-fill their tanks for more than £18 less than in July.
Motoring group AA has welcomed the news and predicted that other retailers will now follow suit as the fuel price war continues to intensify.
Paul Watters, head of public affairs at the AA, said: "At the start of the week it is good news. It is going to make some big savings for diesel drivers that shop at Morrisons ."
He added: "We are delighted that Morrisons have done this. It will keep the price war going, we should see others following Morrisons ."
