Shoppers at Sainsburys can now pick up packs of basic fruit and vegetables for just 40p for a limited time only.
The supermarket giant has today slashed the price of 10 of its most popular fruit and veg lines, including carrots, tomatoes and onions, across stores nationwide. The cut price promotion will run until September 2.
Sophie Firth, the retailer’ own-brand manager, said: "With sales of basics fruit and veg about 30 per cent higher than this time last year, we know that our customers appreciate the low prices but great standards of the range."
"It's end of the month, school holidays and post bank holiday and with household budgets under pressure, we felt it was the right time to cut prices on some of our most popular basic lines."
Sainsbury's has also a selection of "aesthetically challenged" ranges of fruit and vegetables to its basics range – produce that would normally be rejected for cosmetic reasons.
The retailer confirmed that the 15-item range will include exotic crops such as avocados, sweet potatoes and aubergines.
Sainsbury's produce planner Emma Knott commented: "We think of our basics fruit and veg as rough diamonds ; they may not make the grade visually, but they taste fantastic."
