The average family grocery bill has increased by £800 in the last 12 months, a new survey of supermarket prices has found.
According to price comparison website MySupermarket.co.uk, the price of basic grocery items have surged by 15 per cent over the past year, despite the Prime Minister calling for action to curb increases in the cost of food .
The 15 per cent rise is seven times that of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Government's preferred measure of inflation .
The website compared prices for 24 items such as tea bags, cheese, potatoes, pasta sauce and cornflakes at each of the UKs top three supermarket chains - Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys .
The price survey found six pints of semi-skimmed milk are now 28p dearer than a year ago at each of the three retailers, while the cost of a thick white loaf has increased by more than 20 per cent, from 54p to 65p, at both Asda and Tesco .
Shoppers are paying 50 per cent more for a dozen medium free range eggs, while a packet of pasta has nearly doubled from 37p to 67p.
The figures show inflation is costing a family that spends around £100 a week on food shopping an extra £15 per week, or £780 more a year.
The website claimed that retailers are passing an increase in global grain prices - driven by global demand for basic agricultural goods - on to British shoppers.
