Tesco is launching a new website that will enable online consumers to compare car insurance premiums, joining an ever-increasing crowd of price comparison sites in the process.
Tesco Compare.com launches this Thursday and will be the first example of a supermarket chain offering financial products from different providers. It will feature only car insurance to begin with, although it is understood that other products, including home insurance and credit cards, will feature in the near future.
The new venture between Tesco and Royal Bank of Scotland - Britain's biggest motor insurer and the supermarket's partner for financial services products will enter a market already crowded by price comparison sites such as Moneysupermarket.com, Confused.com and uSwitch.com .
The site, available from September 14, is an extension of the supermarkets existing personal finance products and will allow consumers to generate a list of the cheapest insurers for their circumstances and then select up to four to compare policy details.
TescoCompare.com will include quotes from a number of insurers that have not previously featured on price comparison websites, including insurers from The Royal Bank of Scotland group - Churchill, Nationwide and Privilege as well as others.
Peter Dingle, managing director of Tesco Compare, commented: "We asked what our customers wanted and it was clear that they needed to be given not just a list of the cheapest prices, but also details of insurance polices so that they can do a meaningful comparison ."
