Tesco Named Wines And Spirits European Retailer Of The Year

Tesco, the UK’s leading supermarket chain, has been named European Retailer of the Year in this year’s international Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).

The retailer was handed the trophy at an awards banquet, held on Tuesday - at Old Billingsgate Market in London, as it was recognised for its "striking upgrade" in both its breadth of 1,100 wines and the introduction of new wooden fixtures to help showcase the premium ranges in-store .

Tesco’s beers, wines and spirits business was also commended by judges for its well-informed in-store wine advisors and wine club magazine initiative.

With 60 per cent of their range priced at over £5 a bottle and 50 new boutique wines costing between £10- £100 introduced across 250 stores, the panel of judges felt that Tesco had shown the most innovation across the board.

Also commended for its wines and spirits initiatives was upmarket retailer Waitrose, which drew praise for its in-store feel, drinks magazine Thirst and en primeur offering on-line. Waitrose also picked up trophies for both Spirits Buyer of the Year (fifth title in a row) and Wine Buyer of the Year (two titles in last three years).

Britain’s third largest supermarket Sainsbury's was applauded for its stand on green packaging, while Aldi was recognised for its ability to source "laudable wines at knock-down prices."

Australia’s Chapel Hill claimed the title of Winemaker of the Year, while Distiller of the Year was won by South African firm Distell at the 2007 IWSC event .
