Classy supermarket chain Waitrose has unveiled a series of innovative new food initiatives, which will come as a major boost to its fish suppliers .

Mark Price, managing director of the John Lewis owned upmarket retailer unveiled more details of the company's growth plans, which include going even further upmarket and the opening of at least ten new stores over the next 12 months.

However the supermarket, now recognised as the UK’s leading quality seafood retailer, has identified the greatest opportunity for expansion in the high street instead of large stores that are situated out of town.

Mr Price said the company is looking at outlets of up to 20,000 square feet and that fish will play a major part in offering the public quality food .

In terms of making Waitrose more upmarket the managing director is planning on introducing a new wave of premium stores with new designs and a greater product range in which seafood will play a major part.

"We feel our customers are willing to pay more for better food, so we are introducing additional premium lines. By offering better quality in our fresh food ranges we will be able to take customers from all our competitors," he commented.

"We've identified eight million people in the UK who are Waitrose customers, but not all of them have access to our stores, so we have the potential to increase our market share dramatically."

Although the grocery retailer is planning on further distinguishing itself from other rival supermarkets, it still plans on being more competitive than the like’s of Sainsbury's and Tesco.
