Asda DVD players get even cheaper

Asda, the UK’s second-largest supermarket chain is charging into the electrical market by capturing 5 per cent of the £1.9 billion UK sector over the next four years.

The announcement by Asda came late last week to go along with the news that the retailer will become the first to sell a DVD player for under £10, with the launch of the £9 Durabrand 1005 machine.

Previously on sale for £17.84 customers will now be able to pick up the DVD player for less than the average price of a newly-released DVD film .

All of the company’s 316 stores will have the retail the hardware along with seven Asda Living stores throughout the UK, with demand expected to be so high that the product should sell out within days.

"This is truly unbeatable value and puts our competitors in the shade," said Peter Pritchard, Asda's general merchandise trading director .

"Our message to customers is why pay more, when you don't have to? And we can promise them much more to come in the months ahead."

The Wal-Mart owned chain will also launch a dedicated online electricals website this week selling 3,500 lines from washing machines to fridge freezers and plasma screen TVs .

Asda’s head of online general merchandise, Gordon Hewlett said the website would allow the company to increase its non-food merchandise in a much larger way than previously possible in its stores.

The electronic sector is believed to be growing at a rate of 30 per cent each year.
