An estimated 50,000 members of Tesco staff from across the UK are to share a £148 million payout after two of the companys savings schemes matured.
Approximately 50,000 workers, including checkout assistants and delivery drivers, who save up to £50 a month each are entitled to a share of the payout, with over 6,000 people due to receive over £7,000, which equals a 120 per cent return on investment .
Sir Terry Leahy, Tescos chief executive said, "Our staff are the main reason so many people choose to shop with Tesco, and through Save As You Earn they can share in the success they achieve through all their hard work ."
Tesco had recently enjoyed its busiest ever Christmas bringing a great start to the New Year. Its overall sales jumped 5.4 per cent in December and early January compared with the previous year.
The supermarkets 'Finest' range of and meat and poultry saw a 55 per cent sales boost, while its organic ranges rose by 39 per cent. The figures confirmed that 2006 was the year of the 'luxury Christmas' when consumers spent their money on genuine treats, while reducing spending in other areas.
