Sainsburys To Replace Tin Cans With Green Substitute

Sainsbury ’s is set to replace some one of its tin cans with cardboard cartons in a new environmentally-friendly initiative.

The retailer giant said it was the first supermarket to stock the "Tetra Recart" packs, which are made from wood pulp and will help reduce Sainsbury's carbon emissions by cutting down on transport costs .

Sainsbury’s said the packaging will initially be used for its own-label premium chopped tomatoes, moving the product out of a tin can weighing 50g into the lighter packaging, which will weigh just 18g.

The retailer added it expects to be using the Recart packs for tinned fruit and a host of other products within five years.

The Recart packs are easier to store and environmentally efficient to transport due to they’re rectangular shape which enables more to be loaded on to a single lorry .

The carton will also save on recycling costs as it takes up a ninth of the space (when crushed) of equivalent cans and jars and can now be recycled in more than 70 per cent of Britain's local authority areas.

"The launch of this type of packaging is another world first," commented Sainsbury's packaging manager, Stuart Lendrum.

"It combines the benefits of lighter and recyclable Tetra Pak packaging with the use of FSC-certified material. This will make it more efficient for us to transport to our stores and much easier for our customers to carry home ."
