582 Jobs To Be Lost As Morrisons Closes Depot

UK supermarket chain Morrisons has revealed plans to close a West Midlands distribution depot in Tamworth, West Midlands, this summer resulting in the loss of 582 jobs .

The company said the 370,000 sq ft site is being closed at the end of August following a supply network review, which found there might be over capacity in the Midlands area.

Morrsions also stated the move is part of attempts to improve its supplies and deliveries to its grocery stores in the South West and South Wales .

Morrisons says it hopes to sell the location as a going concern, retaining DHL as the operator.

In a statement DHL, who manage the depot and employ staff members, confirmed the closure of the site, which has been used to supply home, health, leisure, and beauty products to stores across the Midlands.

A DHL spokeswoman said, "This is a high density area in terms of DHL operations and we will do everything we can to redeploy as many staff as possible across the business ."

Representatives from the USDAW shopworkers' union and the Transport and General Workers Union are seeking urgent discussions with management officials from Morrison's.

Divisional officer for USDAW, Gary Holz said, "This decision has come to us as a shock and it was very unsettling for the staff."

"We will be having talks with management and asking them for more information."
