Market research firm TNS had revealed that Tesco, Britain's biggest food seller, has maintained its leading share of the UK market . Second-placed Asda has widened its lead over J Sainsbury with Morrisons also showing continued growth in the market .
Tesco have a 31.4 per cent share of the grocery market in the 12 weeks leading up to 8 October, which is up on the 30.1 per cent they achieved a year ago.
In second place was Asda, who are part of the world's biggest retailer, Wal Mart Stores Inc, with a 16.6 per cent share just ahead of rival J Sainsbury on 15.7 per cent. Morrisons are at third place with Waitrose, who now have a 3.9 per cent market share, are at fourth place.
TNSs study also revealed that there was a 5.4 per cent overall expenditure rise to £17.8 billion.
The companys director of research Edward Garner said in a statement, "Earlier in the year there had been speculation that Sainsbury would soon overtake Asda to regain second place, but Asda has managed to widen their lead to 0.9 share points."
"A similar situation was last seen a year ago and this is consistent with the different seasonal nature of the two businesses," he added.
Mr Garner also commented on Morrisons saying, "turnover at Morrisons continued to grow, but that if the business was to show future increases it would need to repeat its success in its Yorkshire heartland."
