Due to a 45 per cent rise in sales made over the internet in the last quarter of 2005, Sainsburys is looking to re-launch its online grocery service.
The service will be given a new name Sainsburys Online and the company are hoping to reach one million households over 83 per cent of the country during 2006.
The time is now right for a re-launch as the past 18 months has seen the chief executive Justin King reviving the fortunes of the supermarket chain.
Mr Kings efforts have paid off as last week Sainsburys posted their fourth period in a row of like-for-like sales growth. Same-store sales were up by more than 5 per cent in the Christmas quarter.
Some of the increase in sales was due to the resolution of an old problem, stock availability that has affected the third largest supermarket in Britain. The system has now been improved, making it more efficient and is directly helping with a boost in internet sales.
Claire Harper, Sainsbury's Online head of marketing, said, "At Christmas, online sales were up nearly 30 per cent. It was our best Christmas ever and we are continuing to see record numbers of customers."
