The king of retail title has been claimed by Tesco as they now are the biggest seller of non-food items. They are already known as the biggest supermarket chain accounting for a third of all large food sales .

Tesco have diversified so much that they sell everything from TVs and CDs to clothes and paint. The result is that they are giving Argos and Homebase a run for their money and soon may take them over as the biggest seller of non-food items.

The company is currently led by Sir Terry Leahy. Under his guidance Tesco opened their first non-food store called Homeplus in Manchester in 2005 and the rumour mill says that a catalogue will also be launched.

Alistair Lockhart, senior retail analyst at Verdict Research said, "One of the things that gives Tesco a massive advantage is it get tremendous footfall coming through the door . By allocating more and more space to non-food they are able to attract a lot of sales by having a high profile, competitive position."

Earlier this year Tesco announced their plan to launch themselves into the US market . Their plan is to start in California with a view to extending this to Las Vegas under the name of Tesco Fresh and Easy.
