Petrol prices were today cut by 2p per litre for the second time in a month by two leading supermarkets.

Asda today dropped the price of unleaded petrol to 85.9p per litre and diesel to 90.9p per litre at its 162 filling stations for the second time in a month following the continued fall in world oil prices.

Asda’s non-food director Tony Page said: "We have cut petrol prices again right across the UK so that all our customers benefit equally, no matter where they live.

"It hardly costs us any more whether we are supplying fuel to our forecourts in Elgin, Falmouth or Coleraine, so it’s only right that all our customers pay the same price."

Rival chain Tesco retaliated by shaving 2p per litre off all grades of petrol at its 382 forecourts.

The reduction was followed last week by a further dip in the global price of crude oil.

Tesco's petrol prices vary across the country.

A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said: "We are always working hard to offer the best value fuel we can and our local pricing policy means that shoppers know we will not be beaten on the price of petrol in any location."
