If you are interested in working in your local M&S store then there are three main career options available to you. These are Customer Assistants, Section Managers and Retail Managers.
The Customer Assistants are the face of the organisation therefore you will need be a ‘people person’ and committed to providing an outstanding service.
Other attributes needed for this role are; to be friendly, enthusiastic and a team player who is confident even under pressure.
The Customer Assistant roles are available across many departments including Clothing, Visual Merchandising, Home, Foods and Cafe Revive.
Section Managers are responsible for taking charge of a small are in a large store.
They are responsible for coaching, motivating and inspiring their team of customer assistants to deliver a outstanding customer service. They will be managing between five to twenty five people and oversee the training and development needs of the individuals they manage.
The Retail Manager on the other hand is responsible for the commercial performance of the whole store.
They will not only drive sales and identify customer behaviour but also manage staffing costs and increase turnover. Joining the organisation at this level requires a range of skills and experience including managing people, financial performance, budgeting and analysis.
The Head Office which is based three miles from London City is home to Marks and Spencer’s support services.
Here you can pursue careers in Buying, Merchandising, IT, Marketing and Supply Chain. If you are interested in careers in Finance or HR then the Shared Services offices based in Salford Quays Manchester is the place for you.
Marks and Spencer Graduate scheme is one of the best offered in the industry. It offers individuals a first class training and development opportunities in retail. To secure a place on the M&S Graduate scheme you don’t need a particular degree but you do need to be good with people.
